Why is Honduran Journalist Day celebrated on May 25

Every May 25 in Honduras the Day of the Journalist is celebrated; a special date that seeks to honor all professionals who work to investigate and report objectively and transparently to the whole of society on issues of public interest.

Here's why Journalist's Day is celebrated on May 25 in Honduras.

Why is Journalist's Day celebrated in Honduras?

Journalist's Day is celebrated on May 25 in Honduras because on this day the country's first printed newspaper, called La Gaceta del Gobierno, was officially published. One hundred years later, on May 25, 1930, the First National Congress of Journalists of Honduras was held.

A few days after this event, the then president of Honduras , Vicente Mejía Colindres declared through the Executive Agreement of May 30, 1930 that every May 25 the Day of the Journalist will be celebrated throughout the country.

In this agreement it was stated that "the Press is a factor of positive importance for the culture of the peoples, the consolidation of peace and the prestige of the institutions." It also stated that "it is the government's duty to perpetuate the events that mark an era of aggrandizement in the country's social evolution and to stimulate the work of those who exercise the noble profession of journalists."

For this reason, the Day of the Journalist in Honduras is celebrated on May 25 and not on September 8 as it is commemorated throughout the world.
